By now it's clear that Avengers: Infinity War is drawing heavily on the 2013 comic Infinity, from the introduction of the villainous Black Order to the invasion of Wakanda.

In terms of which strands of that comic it will focus on, the latest trailer for Joe and Anthony Russo's Marvel movie suggests that a sinister plot involving a traitor in the Avengers' ranks might have been adapted from the older story.

(Warning: Potential Avengers: Infinity War spoilers to follow)

A brief glimpse of the Black Order member Ebony Maw hints that Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) could be turning against his allies in the fight against Thanos.

Ebony Maw is a mysterious alien who has the power to manipulate others and control their minds without them ever knowing.

In Infinity, he uses this power to turn Strange into an unwitting agent who reports back to him even as he seems to be helping his superhero pals.

In the trailer, we see Strange screaming as his head is penetrated by strange, needle-like objects.

Cut to Ebony Maw (in our first proper look at the villain). He smiles and raises a finger to his lips, as though this horrible torture will just be a little secret between him and Strange.

In the comic, the pair are on the trail of the long-lost son of Thanos, a plot that – as far as we know – won't be part of the film.

Tom Vaughan-Lawlor provided motion capture for Ebony Maw, although Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has hinted that some well-known actors will be voicing the Black Order.

Avengers: Infinity War is released in UK cinemas on April 26 and US cinemas on April 27.
