TRNSMT is the biggest music festival in Scotland and has been occurring annually since 2017.

While the event is huge and attracts big names in music like Radiohead, Pulp and Stormzy, few know the meaning behind its name.

Unlike other festivals like its predecessor 'T in the Park' (which was named after its sponsor, Tennents), the name TRNSMT is rather vague.

Why did TRNSMT start?

TRNSMT started all the way back in 2017 after the very last T in the Park event was staged.

The current festival was first announced in 2017 when its predecessor revealed to revellers that it would not be returning.

That first-ever TRNSMT festival saw crowds of 120,000 people show up over the three-day weekend.

The music festival has continued ever since with the only gap being in 2020 when it was cancelled due to restrictions relating to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The event is seen by many as the successor to T in the Park which lasted from 1994 to 2016.

What is the meaning behind 'TRNSMT'?

While the meaning behind TRNSMT has never been announced, it is theorised by most to effectively mean 'transmit' (how music on the radio is disseminated).

This same question was asked a few years back on the social media platform Reddit when one user inquired: "Anybody know what TRNSMT stands for or its meaning?"

Others were quick to respond with one saying: "Transmit with the vowels removed ... being all cool n that."

One user added: "Transmit - Definition of transmit: to send (information, sound, etc.) in the form of electrical signals to a radio, television, computer, etc. : to give or pass (information, values, etc.) from one person to another."

Another, rather negatively, said: "Transmit but with dumb spelling, I think."

TRNSMT returns to Glasgow Green on Friday, July 12, 2024.
