Donald Trump has hit out at the FBI, accusing the agency of "missing signals" sent by the suspect of the school shooting by "spending too much time trying to prove Russian collusion with the Trump campaign".

The US president wrote on Twitter: "Very sad that the FBI missed all of the many signals sent out by the Florida school shooter. This is not acceptable.

"They are spending too much time trying to prove Russian collusion with the Trump campaign - there is no collusion.

"Get back to the basics and make us all proud!"

The FBI admitted on Friday it failed to act on a tip it received last month about suspect Nikolas Cruz, who officials say has admitted to the shooting.

The agency's acknowledgment that it mishandled the tip prompted a sharp rebuke from its boss, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and a call from Florida's Republican governor Rick Scott, an ally, for FBI Director Christopher Wray to resign.

Mr Trump's tweet appeared to make a connection between the FBI's shortfalls in the case with its investigation into possible collusion between Russia and the Trump team during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The president has repeatedly denied any links with Moscow.

Earlier this week, thirteen Russians were charged with meddling in the US 2016 election.

Three of those named have been accused of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and five are alleged to have been involved in aggravated identity theft.

Robert Mueller, who is leading the Department of Justice investigation into possible election interference, made the announcement on Friday.
