The White House has hinted that Donald Trump will visit Britain in 2018 – amid claims that he will open the new US embassy in London.

New discussions between The US President and Mrs May are believed to have focused on his February ‘working visit’ – which will see him opening the new US embassy and hold talks with the Prime Minister.

But it is not an official state visit, so a planned meeting with The Queen is not believed to be a part of the divisive US President’s schedule.

The White House has now confirmed that details of a visit will be announced ‘soon’, after the issue was raised to White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

‘That invitation has been extended and accepted. And we’re working with them to finalise the details, which we expect to announce soon’, she said.

‘And we’ll keep you guys posted on that once that’s finalised.’

The visit is expected to go ahead despite a series of ugly clashes with Mrs May – including a major Twitter row last month when Trump condemned the Prime Minister for attacking his decision to retweet anti-Muslim propaganda from far-right group Britain First.

Last week, US Ambassador Woody Johnson first hinted at the possibility of a visit on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme when asked if he expected Mr Trump to come to the UK next year.

‘Absolutely. I think he will come. I am hoping he will come’, he confirmed.

Trump’s visit is also expected to be met with fierce opposition, after Labour MP David Lammy claimed that the UK will respond with one of the biggest protests in history.

‘Sunday Times reporting Trump ‘flying visit’ has been pencilled in for 26-27 February. Save the date, he’s going to be met by the biggest protest this country has ever seen’, he wrote on Twitter earlier this month.

The new US embassy is located in South London on the banks of the River Thames and reportedly cost £750 million to construct.
