Dr Michael Mosley's good friend Dr Phil Hammond has shared a moving message about the late TV doctor on This Morning. Dr Mosley's body was found on Sunday four days after the doctor went missing on the Greek island, Symi on Wednesday in red-hot temperatures.

Hammond was given his TV break by Dr Mosley on 1996 BBC documentary Trust Me, I'm A Doctor. They go way back, having first met in 1995 when Dr Mosley approached Hammond about his idea for a documentary.

The doctor appeared on This Morning to share his fond memories of his friend in the wake of his death. He credited Dr Mosley for his "infectious enthusiasm" and he said: "He probably helped far more people than your average doctor."

"He reached millions," he said. "People didn't just want his book signed, they wanted to line up and say thank you for turning around my health. You'd meet people who had turned around their health after following his diet.

"Even though he wasn't a practicing doctor, he probably helped far more people than your average doctor because his reach was so huge, his communication was great, he got people to change their behaviour which is really difficult."

Hammond had heaps of praise for the late Dr Mosley as he said he was impressed by his friend's "infectious enthusiasm" and his ability - and determination - to always get the facts right when it came to the science.

He said: "His infectious enthusiasm was what really struck you. Plus, the fact that he got the science right. When you're doing science reporting, it's really important to get the facts right.

"He had a good team around him with science backgrounds. He'd be across every single stories. He was like an enthusiastic child, he would go down the rabbit hole."

The friends first met in 1995. Hammond reflected on the time when they first crossed paths and how Trust Me, I'm A Doctor was born.

Hammond said: "Gosh I first met Michael in 1995. He had some how discovered that I was private eye secret medical correspondent MD had broken a big scandal - the Bristol heart scandal that was going to become a public inquiry.

"He come up with this idea of doing a show Trust Me, I'm A Doctor that two strands. One that was to look at care in the NHS and try and get better standards of care. One that was his real passion that was lifestyle/medicine."

This Morning's official Instagram account shared a tribute at the weekend which read: "We’re all heartbroken to hear that Michael Mosley has died at the age of 67. His wife Clare has paid tribute to her “wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband”. Everyone at This Morning is thinking of Clare, their four children and the rest of Michael’s family and friends at this extremely sad time."

Mosley’s co-presenter on BBC series Trust Me, I’m A Doctor, Chris van Tulleken, paid tribute to the star saying his friend was his inspiration for his own medical routine every day.

He said: "Broadcasting can be very competitive and a bit cut-throat. Michael set this tone where we have all become friends. On screen we’re all pals, off screen we’re all pals."

Van Tulleken added: "He really created this generous idea that we were all in this together and so he was endlessly helpful off screen as well."

He later said: "There’s so much of his content I just consumed as a normal consumer. I enjoyed it, it entertained me while I was listening, and then it quietly changed my daily practices. So my own personal medical routine every day is very, very based on the work of Michael Mosley over the last 10/15 years."
