Drake reviving drug dealer drama Top Boy for Netflix

Netflix has confirmed British drug dealer drama Top Boy is to make a return with Drake at the helm.

The 31-year-old rapper will executive produce the new 10-episode run of the programme, which will see Ashley Walters and rapper Kano reprise their roles as Dushane and Sully respectively.

Drake is to revive Top Boy for Netflix.

Ronan Bennett will write the new season of the returning show – which previously aired for two series on Channel 4 from 2011 to 2013 – and the original creative team of Charles Steel, Alasdair Flind, and Yann Demange are also on board.

The new series will see Dushane return to London and re-team with his partner in crime Sully, who has recently got out of prison.

As they look to re-establish themselves at the top of the drug market hierarchy, they will come up against Jamie, a young, hungry and ruthless gang leader.

Ronan said: “I am delighted to be reunited once more with the Top Boy team – our wonderful cast and my partners at Cowboy Films – and to have Drake and SpringHill as new collaborators.

Ashley Walters will reprise his role in the series.

“And I could not be prouder to be doing the show with Netflix.”

As well as Drake, the series will be executive produced by his business partner Adel “Future” Nur, along with Maverick Carter and Jamal Henderson for basketball star LeBron James’ SpringHill Entertainment.

It is not yet known who will take on the role of Jamie.

The Top Boy revival will be released on Netflix in 2019.

Last year, Ashley seemed confident Drake would be part of a new Top Boy series because the rapper is a huge fan of the show.

He previously said: “What I can say is that, behind the scenes, there’s some serious work going on to make it happen, and between a lot of good people too.

“So, it’s going to happen at some point, but I can’t really talk about it too much until the paper has been signed.

“Drake is involved. He’s coming on board to help and try and push the situation forward. We’ll see what happens! I’ve gone through having empty promises, and I’ve always relied on myself.

“I take whatever anyone says with a pinch of salt, but hopefully it will work out.”

In 2014, Drake tweeted Ashley praising him on his performance in the drama series.

He wrote: “@AshleyWalters82 is too incredible!! Everybody on Top Boy gives such incredible performances. That show is just too good. (sic)”

Ashley replied: “@Drake thank u for the support bro glad ur enjoying the show! #TopBoy #AlwaysWinning (sic)”
