A drink-driver aggressively rammed a woman's car after he passed through a red light and later sped away from police on the motorway. The victim and her daughter were shocked by the driver's actions and could be heard saying: "What the f***?".

Marc Morgan, 56, came to an impasse after he and his victim's vehicles came nose to nose in Risca, Caerphilly, on January 28. The defendant was in the wrong having skipped a red light but he refused to move.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday heard Morgan began to flash his lights and gesticulate with his hands. He then moved his car forward and rammed the victim's vehicle three times, reversing after making contact and driving forward again.

He then drove past the victim's car making contact with cones in the road as he did so. The victim called the police who caught up with Morgan in the High Cross area of Newport.

An officer drove next to the defendant and spoke to him but Morgan told him to "f*** off". He was pursued through residential streets and onto the M4 where he reached speeds of 85mph and attempted to ram into the officer. The officer said this would have been "catastrophic" had he not taken evasive action.

Morgan, of Quantock Close, Risca, was eventually arrested after his vehicle was caught by a stinger and he was found to be three times the drink-drive limit with a reading of 110mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The defendant later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, drink-driving, and failing to stop and the court heard he had five previous convictions including drink-driving.

In mitigation defence barrister Jeffrey Jones said his client was "contrite" and had previously suffered from depression. He argued a prison sentence could be suspended in his case as there was a "realistic prospect of rehabilitation".

Judge Carl Harrison sentenced Morgan to eight months imprisonment. The defendant was disqualified from driving for three years and four months.
