Driver Dies As Crowded Commuter Trains Collide

A train driver has been killed and at least 90 people injured after two packed commuter trains collided in South Africa.

One train is reported to have smashed into another that was waiting at a station in Denver, in Johannesburg's east, on Tuesday morning.

Emergency services spokesman Russel Meiring said the driver of one train was declared dead at the scene.

He added that a female passenger became trapped between the train and a wall.

Rescuers managed to free her before airlifting her to a hospital.

"Paramedics, along with various services, arrived on the scene and found the wrecked trains blocking the tracks completely," said Mr Meiring.

"Bent metal and parts of the train had been spread across the scene."

Both trains were travelling from the capital Pretoria when crash occurred.

The cause is not yet known.
