Drone Footage Shows Scale of Flooding After Wheeling Battered by Days of Heavy Rain

Days of heavy rainfall caused the Ohio River to burst its banks, leaving large areas of Wheeling, West Virginia, under water on April 4.

Wheeling mayor Glenn Elliott told local news outlet MetroNews that the Ohio River had reached the highest level seen in the city in 20 years, with more than half of Wheeling Island expected to end up flooded.

Drone footage released by Wheeling, WV Fire Department shows the scale of the flooding across the island, with roads, residential areas, and green spaces covered by flood water.

The Ohio River crested at almost 42 feet late on Thursday and is expected to remain in flood stage across West Virginia into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Credit: Wheeling, WV Fire Department via Storyful
