The Duchess of Sussex says she understands what it's like to feel heard, and also how it feels not to have no one listen to you at all.

The royal made a rare statement as part of a Marie Claire feature, which asked 100 influential women why they'll vote in the forthcoming US election on 3 November. Meghan has stayed away from public life since lockdown, other than to take part in this year’s Girl Up leadership summit.

On the subject of voting, the Duchess said it was crucial to exercise our right to be heard and that collectively we have the power to change the political landscape.

"I know what it's like to have a voice, and also what it's like to feel voiceless," she told Marie Claire. "I also know that so many men and women have put their lives on the line for us to be heard. And the opportunity, that fundamental right, is in our ability to exercise our right to vote and to make all of our voices heard."

She continued to relay a favourite quote "and one that my husband and I have referred to often" from Kate Sheppard, a leader in the suffragist movement in New Zealand: 'Do not think your single vote does not matter much. The rain that refreshes the parched ground is made up of single drops.' That's why I vote.'"

In July, Meghan and Harry filed a lawsuit in LA after drones were used to take pictures of their young son outside at home. The couple's lawyer, Michael J Kump, described the photos as "harassment", adding that “every individual and family member in California is guaranteed by law the right to privacy in their home.”

In a separate lawsuit, the Duchess is suing the publisher of the Mail on Sunday and Mail Online for breach of privacy and copyright infringement.
