EastEnders hints at new storyline for Ben Mitchell as he struggles

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders has foreshadowed a new storyline for Ben Mitchell.

The last few weeks have seen Ben turning to intense physical training as a means to cope with some devastating news — first his rapist Lewis was arrested for another crime and then Lola asked for Jay to take custody of Lexi once she's gone.

In Wednesday's (April 26) episode, Phil lined up a meeting for Ben with his attorney Ritchie Scott where she suggested a compromise that would allow Jay parental rights without a full adoption.

Ben was opposed to this compromise because he thought it would be admitting he was a good father, though Kathy intervened to insist that Lola and Jay were only trying to give Lexi all the support she'll need.

Ben still wasn't convinced until he met with Jay and his best mate offered to completely drop the idea unless he was fully on board. After these interventions, Ben finally relented and agreed to a compromise.

Ben later explained to Callum and Kathy at the Vic that he'd changed his mind after "speaking to a couple of people", then apologised to his spouse for his recent erratic behaviour.

"I'm not the easiest person to live with and I don't know how you put up with me half the time," he declared.

When Ben excused himself, Kathy and Callum were relieved because it really seemed like Ben had a breakthrough. However, viewers next saw Ben came out from a loo stall with a face drenched in sweat.

Ben washed his face in the nearby sink and then stared at his reflection, clearly haunted by what he was seeing. Future episodes will continue to explore the destructive ways Ben is coping with stress and anxiety.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
