Gray Atkins is a ticking time-bomb in EastEnders next week as the stress of Whitney Dean’s murder case continues to get to him.

And – as usual – it’s his wife, Chantelle, who’s left to bear the brunt of his anger.

When his office returns his belongings, Gray can’t face telling Whitney what’s happened. Instead he heads over to the Vic after warning Chantelle not to tell her parents.

Wanting to comfort him and sensing his mood, Chantelle asks mum Karen to babysit. But back home, Gray learns his firm has dropped Whitney’s case and he takes his anger out on Chantelle.

She suggests that he represents Whitney without his firm. Her words strike a chord with Gray and, when Chantelle tells him she’s going to go back to work, he tells her he’s decided to rep Whitney and win his job back.

Later, Chantelle’s dad, Mitch, is intrigued when Jack Branning mentions that he saw Gray heading into a hotel during working hours.

He grills Gray about it, leaving Gray furious. When he tells Chantelle about his encounter with his dad, she’s quick to calm him down.

At the Taylors’, Mitch confides in Karen about what he’s heard and tells her he thinks Gray is having an affair. Karen laughs his claims off, but it’s clear Mitch isn’t convinced and he’s determined to get to the bottom of what’s going on.

Despite warnings from Karen, Mitch decides to follow Gray. He’s stopped by Chantelle who warns him to back off.

But Mitch is undeterred and calls Gray’s office. He’s floored to hear that his son-in-law has been suspended.

Mitch then seeks out Gray and tells him he knows everything, but his offer of money leaves Gray seething.

At home, Gray loses it with Chantelle, accusing her of telling her dad and attacking her brutally. Later, while Chantelle recovers at home, Gray heads to the pub where everyone cheers his arrival.

As Mitch apologises for doubting him, a mortified Gray realises that Chantelle didn’t say anything.

But has he pushed her too far this time?

EastEnders continues tonight at 7.30pm on BBC One.
