EastEnders star Samantha Womack lands new musical role

Former EastEnders star Samantha Womack has revealed her next role will be on the stage, as part of the musical production 42nd Street.

The production follows the story of Peggy Sawyer, a young actress who arrives in New York to audition for a part in a Broadway show. Womack will be playing the role of Dorothy Brock, an ageing stage star known for her inability to dance.

She'll be joined on stage by fellow soap actors Michael Praed (Emmerdale) and Les Dennis (Coronation Street), while Faye Tozer and Nicole-Lily Baisden round off the cast.

Beginning in Canterbury on July 13, the production will make stops in Leeds, Bristol, Plymouth, Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Southampton, Newcastle, Woking and Belfast.

Womack is best known for her role as Ronnie Mitchell on EastEnders, appearing on the BBC soap from 2007 to 2017.

The actress isn't a stranger to the stage either. She has previously starred in The Girl on the Train as Rachel Watson, The Addams Family as Morticia Addams and in The Witch and The Wardrobe as the White Witch (seen centre-stage in the image below).

The news comes just months after Womack gave a positive update on her breast cancer, revealing she had been told she was cancer-free in December last year. The actress had shared the news of the initial diagnosis in August, subsequently undergoing a lumpectomy and chemotherapy.

"I feel very thankful for my life. I know that sounds crazy, but it's almost like I can see the beauty in everything now," she said in an interview with OK! magazine at the time.

"Like everything feels special. I keep bursting into tears, because I'm happy."
