EastEnders spoilers for the week of Monday, September 7 and beyond follow.

EastEnders star Louisa Lytton has hinted at a "confrontation" between best friends Ruby Allen and Stacey Fowler on the soap.

Lacey Turner will make her return from maternity leave as the culmination of a multi-week mystery storyline this autumn about Stacey's whereabouts — and she's in for a huge surprise.

Stacey is set to discover that her close friend Ruby has locked down and started a romantic relationship with her estranged husband Martin Fowler (James Bye).

Asked if a showdown is looming, Lytton told Digital Spy and other media this week: "I hope we get a confrontation. For me, Lacey is the show. When I was there 15 years ago, we did everything together as a friendship couple – so for Lacey to be back, it feels like home again for me.

"I love working with her. Obviously we are good friends, but more than anything, I think it's exciting to see a friendship that will go through so much, as you do in life, as they are the only friends each other have got – they have to come back together every single time because they have no-one else. In real life, I probably wouldn't do it!"

Executive producer Jon Sen also promised fans that Ruby and Martin will definitely have some explaining to do once Stacey arrives back on the Square.

"Lacey is amazing and part of EastEnders history and we have really missed her energy in the Slaters. So, the first two weeks we tease a mystery – where is Stacey?" he hinted.

"Are all of these things going on [on] the Square to do with her – then she's back with a bang. There are some fantastic Ruby vs Stacey scenes – and we can't wait to find out what Stacey does when she discovers what has been going on between Martin and Ruby. As a return, that is a big moment."

EastEnders resumes new episodes on Monday, September 7 at 8.05pm on BBC One.
