The writer of Eastern Promises has confirmed a sequel is finally in the works.

The film, which was released in 2007 and stars Viggo Mortensen, Naomi Watts and Vincent Cassel, was directed by David Cronenberg and proved somewhat of a hit, thanks to its brutal storytelling and that unforgettable sauna opening.

Speaking recently, writer Steven Knight confirmed he had finally finished a script for a second movie - it was changed a few times to include the current topical feature of Russia's ties with the US - and that production is close with a director attached, adding that the film will not feature Mortensen this time around.

“It is like fishing, where you leave it out there," Knight told Collider. "And it’s been out there for a while.

"It went through permutations in the sense of, how do you follow Viggo? We’ve been through that and we’ve moved on and now we’re in a position where I will say 'watch this space,' we’re close to getting into production.”

Back in 2012, director Cronenberg told Digital Spy that a previous Eastern Promises sequel had been canned due to money issues, and that one would have seen Mortensen reprise his role as the shady Nikolai.

The original movie made $56 million at the global box office in 2007 and earned Mortensen a 'Best Actor' Oscar nomination.

So, we're sure it's a very coveted gig for whoever bags the lead role this time around.
