Edinburgh high school students evacuated following reports of 'gas smell'

Science pupils at an Edinburgh high school were evacuated from their classroom after reports of a 'gas smell' on Wednesday morning.

Pupils at Liberton High School were led out at around 10am and the block was shut. Edinburgh Live understands it was only the science block that was shut and the rest of the site remained open as normal.

Scottish Gas has confirmed they were present to carry out safety checks and found no gas readings within the school. ]Edinburgh Council officials also confirmed classes within the science block in the school were moved to other parts of the building until gas engineers came out. A spokesperson for Scottish Gas said: "We attended Liberton High School, in our capacity as the nation's gas emergency service, following reports of the smell of gas.

"When our teams arrived at the school, they carried out safety checks and found no gas readings. The source of the smell was not related to our gas network."

A spokesperson for Edinburgh Council said: "There was a smell of gas in one of the science labs this morning so they switched off the supply as a precaution.

"Classes in the science block went to other parts of the building until gas engineers came out and confirmed everything was fine. There was no impact on SQA exams".
