Edinburgh rail passengers delayed after 'person hit by train on the line'

Edinburgh rail passengers faced delays on Wednesday morning after a casualty on the tracks.

The incident happened on the line between the capital and London Kings Cross on Wednesday. Officers received reports at around 6.48am, and raced to Newark-on-Trent.

Paramedics also attended. An individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious. Due to emergency services dealing with the incident, those heading between Edinburgh and London saw delays of up to 30 minutes.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: "“Officers were called to the line near Newark-on-Trent at around 6.48am today (22 May) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

Lumo Travel said on X/Twitter: "Please be aware that due to the emergency services dealing with an incident earlier today the 6.23am Edinburgh to London Kings Cross (due 10.46am) is being delayed between Grantham and London Kings Cross and is now expected to be 23 minutes late.

LNER added: "It is with great sadness that due to a person being hit by a train between Retford and Newark, all lines are blocked. Please bear with us, as soon as we have further information we will update you."
