Edinburgh residents 'heartbroken' as bar announces closure leaving 'hole in city'

An Edinburgh city centre bar branded a "true gem" by locals has announced their closure, following a decision made by new landlords.

Hoot the Redeemer, which sits on Hanover Street, will close their doors for the last time in September. Owner Iain McPherson said the team had "tried their best", though new those who own the property have "plans for the whole building".

Residents were "heartbroken" by the news, adding that the loss would leave a "big hole" in the city.

Iain McPherson, who is also behind Panda & Sons and Nauticus, told CLASS : “I tried my best over the past 18 months to try and keep it open, but the new landlords have plans for the whole building and in the end there was nothing I could do.

"I apologise to everyone connected that I somewhat failed in that sense. It's a really gutting feeling, as we had created something really unique and the team have been absolutely brilliant.

"Telling the team the news was probably the hardest thing I've had to do in my 10-plus years as a bar operator. Please pop in while you still have time, as there will never be a bar and bar team similar to Hoot. Hoot will last a lifetime in my heart.”

Locals were gutted by the news. One follower commented: "S***e news indeed. But let's send off In style. Hoot for life!"

Another added: "Such sad news! All the love to team hoot."
