People who claim State Pension could get freebies and discounts worth over £3,000 - here's how.

Figures show there are 12,579,000 State Pension claimants receiving payments from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). This is a weekly payment from the Government to men and women aged 66 and over and is designed to give anyone a retirement income to support them as they get older and are less likely to be able to work, reports BirminghamLive.

Here is a round-up of freebies and discounts you could get if you are on either the full or basic State Pension in June. The list includes free NHS prescriptions and reduced household bills.

Free prescriptions - £118

Some groups are automatically entitled to free NHS prescriptions. Others can apply for certificates that entitle them to free NHS prescriptions. Some prescribed items are always free, including contraceptives and medication given to hospital inpatients. Your prescriber can give you more information.

Free dental treatment - £282

You do not have to pay for NHS dental services if you're under 18, or under 19 and in full-time education, pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months or being treated in an NHS hospital and your treatment is carried out by the hospital dentist (but you may have to pay for any dentures or bridges) or receiving low income benefits, or you're under 20 and a dependant of someone receiving low income benefits.

Free TV Licence - £169

If you're 75 or over and you claim Pension Credit, you're entitled to a free TV licence. If you're visually impaired, you may be able to get a discount. You need a TV licence to watch or record live programmes on any TV channel, including BBC channels. You also need a licence to watch BBC programmes using BBC iPlayer – whether you're watching live or watching a downloaded programme on your TV, computer, tablet or smartphone. A standard TV licence costs £169.50 per year. However, you might be eligible for a discount or even a free TV licence.

Council tax discount - up to £2,171

You could be eligible if you’re on a low income or claim benefits. Your bill could be reduced by up to 100%. You can apply if you own your home, rent, are unemployed or working. What you get depends on:

  • where you live - each council runs its own scheme

  • your circumstances (for example income, number of children, benefits, residency status)

  • your household income - this includes savings, pensions and your partner’s income

  • if your children live with you

  • if other adults live with you

Social tariffs - £234

Social tariffs are available from several broadband providers, helping those on benefits access an internet connection at a much lower monthly price. Social tariffs are a way to get broadband if you're receiving Universal Credit or another type of financial support. They're much cheaper than the standard monthly rate for the service and are reserved for these customers to help them afford the usual monthly price of a broadband connection.

Uswitch recently found that two-thirds of financially vulnerable households are unaware that low-income broadband tariffs exist. That's a rough total of ten million homes that could save up to £234 a year, or nearly £20 per month, on a cheaper broadband contract.

Discounted water bills - £160

In the latest MSE newsletter, Martin Lewis' team revealed that around 5.7 million households could cut their water bills by up to £160 a year through support schemes from water suppliers. The support schemes are called social tariffs and every water company has one.

MSE explained: "Every water company (in England & Wales) has a social tariff scheme for those on low incomes which can lower bills or cap what you pay. Many firms have just updated their criteria for 2024 - to see if you qualify."

Free insulation and boiler grants - £1,000s

Free insulation under ECO is an initiative to reduce the UK's energy consumption by offering thermal insulation to homes across England, Scotland and Wales. It provides grants to vulnerable households in order to help them improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

By increasing insulation in your home, you can save between £100 - £450 a year on energy bills. Some types of insulation would normally cost you up to £12,000. By applying you can have such insulation for free and increase your property value.

Free bus pass - £128

In England you can get a bus pass for free travel when you reach the State Pension age. If you live in London, you can travel free on buses, tubes and other transport when you're 60, but only within London. In Wales you can get a bus pass when you reach 60.

The average person with a concessionary bus pass made 64 journeys in the year to March 2023. That's the equivalent to an annual saving of a £128, with the average bus ticket currently costing £2.
