Elise Christie disqualified after yet another fall at Winter Olympics: 'She's fallen more times than Bitcoin'

Team GB’s Elise Christie was dramatically disqualified from the women's 1000m heat in the Winter Olympics after suffering yet another devastating fall on the ice.

The 27-year-old’s dreams of winning a medal came to an abrupt end after she fell within the first lap of the race in Pyeongchang.

The race was re-started and Christie, who was disqualified in each of her three events at Sochi 2014, crossed the line in second place only for the judges to disqualify her for bumping into Holland's Anna van Ruijven.

It came after she was spectacularly taken down by Chinese rival Li Jinyu during the 1,500m semi-finals last week and crashed during the 500m short-track speed skating final.

Scores of people on social media expressed their bemusement at the athlete's unlucky run with one saying she had "fallen more times than Bitcoin".

The Wolves Molinews Twitter account shared a GIF of a car manouevring wildly with its doors wide open with the caption: "Elise Christie arriving back at the Olympic Park".

Another described the performance as being akin to watching Brexit unfold.

One joked that the athlete’s journey is “that of a Disney film written by Charlie Brooker."
