Elton John's New Book is a Real-Life “Ted Lasso” Story — See the Cover! (Exclusive)

'Watford Forever' explores how Elton John and Graham Taylor transformed a struggling football team

Elton John and football may not be a natural connection in most people's minds — but with his new book, that might change.

Watford Forever, written with John Preston and due out this fall from Liveright Publishing, tells the story of the Watford Football Club's glow-up with the help of the international rock superstar.

The broad strokes might feel familiar to Ted Lasso fans. The Watford Football Club, a team from the outer suburbs of London, was floundering. In the mid-1970s, attendance had dwindled to barely enough to fill the stadium. Watford stood in 92nd place in the English Football League and the team a young Elton had followed with his dad was in trouble. John, then just 29, bought the team and together with star Graham Taylor as manager, gave it a TV-worthy makeover.

“Perhaps my father was at the back of it somewhere,” John told The Athletic about his reasons for taking on the team. “Perhaps I wanted to do something to mark all the great times I’d had there as a kid.”

Watford Forever offers some inroads into the singer's personal life as well, especially his relationship with Taylor. The superstar has called their relationship lifesaving.

The book "recalls the improbably tender relationship between Elton John and Taylor, a straight-talking former fullback, who together beat the odds and their personal demons to save a club and a struggling community," according to the publisher.

Elton, of course, hardly needs an introduction. After he rocketed rose to international fame in 1970 with his single "Your Song," he earned his eponymous nickname the "Rocket Man" after his 1972 hit of the same name. His 31 albums since 1969, have made him one of the best-selling artists of all time, not to mention earning him many awards and accolades.
