Emmerdale casts Corrie star Oliver Farnworth as new Sugden

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale will be welcoming a new Sugden to the village later this summer, with former Coronation Street star Oliver Farnworth having been cast as a previously unseen member of the family.

The soap has confirmed that Farnworth will arrive on our screens in August as John Sugden, who will cause chaos for Victoria Sugden, who is currently the only remaining member of the family left in the village.

Described as "brooding and mysterious", John will bring his own secrets to the village and will introduce "fresh challenges and intriguing relationships" for the Dales residents.

John is due to catch the eye of one particular villager, which is set to cause lots of drama. And with John's relationship to Victoria still to be confirmed, the newcomer's arrival is bound to raise plenty of questions.

John's arrival will introduce a new generation of the long-running Sugden family, who were originally introduced in the soap's first ever episode in 1972.

Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw said that everyone at the soap is "thrilled to have an actor with Oliver's talent and presence join the Emmerdale family".

"The Sugdens have always been central to Emmerdale, and introducing a new member opens up exciting possibilities for future storylines," she continued. "Mysterious John's arrival will no doubt create a stir in the village for Victoria and the wider community."

Farnworth is known for playing Andy Carver in Corrie from 2014-17, who was first introduced as Gavin Rodwell. It was later revealed that Andy was posing as Gavin, but his 'father' Michael eventually forgave him when he discovered the truth. Andy was eventually murdered by serial killer Pat Phelan, having been kept chained in a basement for months.

The actor also played Hollyoaks student Will Hackett from 2006-7, who manipulated his flatmates and stalked Zoe Carpenter, and was eventually sectioned.

Farnworth has revealed that he is "absolutely delighted to be joining the cast of Emmerdale" following his previous soap roles.

"The show has such a rich history, and the Sugden family is integral to that," he said. "I'm looking forward to bringing my character to life and working with such a talented and dedicated team."

Farnworth will make his Emmerdale debut in August.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
