Yahoo News Emmerdale is cleared over Rhona rape scene complaints
Emmerdale is in the clear with Ofcom after Rhona Goskirk's rape ordeal sparked more than 100 complaints last month.
The ITV soap faced a backlash from some fans after a harrowing scene saw Pierce Harris aggressively shove his new wife Rhona to the floor, before brutally attacking her.
Although the act of rape was implied rather than shown, the episode left viewers divided – with many complaining that it was unsuitable for pre-watershed broadcast.
A total of 101 complaints were made after the scenes aired, but Digital Spy can now confirm that they have all been rejected, as broadcasting watchdog Ofcom noted that the scene itself was limited and warnings were issued.
"We took into account that the broadcaster had issued a warning and the scene was limited," an Ofcom spokesperson added.
"It was also the culmination of a long-running storyline, and so was likely to have been in line with what most viewers were expecting. Emmerdale is known to have covered many challenging social issues."
Emmerdale continues tonight (Monday, May 22) at 7pm on ITV.
