‘Emmerdale’: Cain and Al's feud will culminate with explosive stunt

Emmerdale star Jeff Hordley says his character Cain Dingle’s feud with Al Chapman (Michael Wildman) will culminate in a special effects stunt.

Cain is currently embroiled in an ongoing battle with Al, which has seen the two men trying to destroy each other’s lives. After Al’s car ends up in Cain’s garage for repairs, he is left suspicious when he finds a cable tie in the engine.

Confronting Cain, Al challenges him to prove the vehicle is safe by driving it himself. Cain agrees, aiming the car straight at Al before coming to a screeching halt at the last minute.

Speaking at a recent press event, Hordley reminds us that the rivalry between Al and Cain has led to car-related drama before. “This is not the first time. But Al keeps coming back to the garage!” he jokes.

Asked about filming the driving stunt during the ITV soap’s explosive week of drama, the star explains how the team were able to make the scene look so perilous. "Obviously, Michael is nowhere near. All it is, is the camera inside of the car over my shoulder.

"My stop is so far away from him, but the camera makes it look closer. It’s the magic of telly!”

While it seems that Cain will avoid hitting Al with the car, we can’t give away what happens next. But we do know that Al will also try to teach Cain’s relative, Noah Dingle (Jack Downham), a lesson for stalking Chloe Harris (Jessie Elland).

“This is a red rag to a bull, isn’t it?” Hordley says when asked how Cain reacts to Al’s intervention. “This is the wrong person to get involved in the situation.

“But obviously Al’s connected to Kerry, and Kerry’s connected to Chloe. So therefore the connection all makes sense, but it’s the wrong person to go for Noah.”

In the lead up to this big week, Cain’s estrangement from mum Faith is also at its peak. The actor reflects on the origins of his alter ego’s deep rooted resentment.

“You have to go back to that flashback episode; [Faith] walked out on him. [Cain] was awake that night when she walked out of the room. She thought he was asleep, but he was awake. And she left him with Shadrach - a drunk - and he had to stand up for him and Chas."

“So he’s always felt that his mother’s let him down; but I think deep down with Cain, all he actually wants is his mother to do the right thing. He just wants his mum to be a mother,” he notes.

“But she constantly lets him down; and this is what happens in this block again - just another thing, just like ‘here we go again.' It’s the start of him really wanting to wash his hands of Faith.”

Does Cain have any idea that Faith is struggling amid her shocking behaviour? “No, it’s what Faith does,” Hordley replies. “It’s what his mother does; it’s not unusual. It’s always: ‘you always let me down, you always do this.’”

While Cain is fixated on his mother’s misdemeanours, can he ever go too far himself? “As with most of the Dingles, it’s all about family. Now if somebody did something to one of his children, then who knows how far Cain will go. I think that’s the only answer I can give you on that!”
