Emmerdale star Emma Atkins has addressed a possible reunion for Charity and Cain Dingle says, 'wouldn't it be nice!' The actress joined the ITV soap back in 2000 but did face a bit of competition for the role.

Things could have been very different for Emma, as acclaimed actress Suranne Jones also auditioned for the role, but Emma was cast and her then-rival went on to play Karen McDonald in Coronation Street.

Charity then arrived in the village for the funeral of her cousin Butch, alongside village bad boy Cain and her uncle Shadrach and quickly became a firm favourite amongst Emmerdale fans who has been known for her doomed romances over the years among being part of other major storylines.

When she did first arrive in the Dales, Charity began a relationship with millionaire Chris Tate while having an affair with his sister, Zoe. During her marriage to Chris, she discovered that Paddy and Emily Kirk's foster child Debbie was her daughter, stemming from a one-night-stand with Cain when she was only 13 years old.

Soon, the new family grew closer and Charity began an affair with Cain. However, Chris, who had just been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour, found out and poisoned himself and tried to frame Charity for his murder. Whilst in custody, Charity gave birth to Chris' son, Noah, and after being acquitted of Chris' murder, began a relationship with the much older Tom King.

She later left the village, with Debbie staying behind with Cain. But four years later, Charity returned to Emmerdale, moved in with Debbie and pursued a relationship with Cain. Later, she got a job working for Jai Sharma and Cain's mistaken belief that they were having an affair caused the breakdown of their relationship

While the pair have continued to be close over the years, Charity and Cain's romantic relationship hasn't returned, with Charity now married to Mackenzie Boyd and Cain to Moria Dingle. But could there ever be a way back for the pair?

When asked about the possibility of revisiting the spark between Charity and Cain, Emma told the Manchester Evening News and other press: "Wouldn't it be nice. I do love the old school Cain and Charity but we all know that time moves on and I do love the Moira/Cain chemistry."

She continued: "It's brilliant because they are both different and work as a Yin and Yang but with Charity and Cain, there's that level that there'd be too much friction because they are from a similar stock whereas Moira has that morally upstanding nature and I wouldn't want to change their dynamic but I would love to work with Jeff [Hordley, who plays Cain] and Nat Robb [who plays Moira."

When also asked about how things are currently going for Charity and Mack, after he forgave her for stabbing him during a severe PTSD episode, and if they're in a good place right now, Emma responded: "Yeah, probably that's why we haven't been doing much stuff because we're on an even keel. It's quite good, it's comfortable and steady. It's quite functional which is unheard for Charity but it's allowed us all to have a bit of a breather."

She added: "In fact, we've been blessed with two years of awesome and consistent storylines so I think we're just doing our own thing. Mack is doing a lot with Aaron [Dingle, played by Danny Miller] so it's been good to do some Dingle stuff."
