It's been a very, very rough week for The Emoji Movie and we're sad to say it shouldn't be expecting any 😍 again any time soon.

First, the James Corden and Patrick Stewart-starring animated comedy was ransacked on Twitter for an ill-advised advert parodying The Handmaid's Tale - but that might actually seem pleasant compared to the thrashing it's now getting from critics.

Below, we'll share with you a bunch of reviews explaining just why something as seemingly innocuous as The Emoji Movie has critics tapping into their inner-😡:

Vox

"Most likely, it was going to be a garbage fire. And now that I've seen it, I can confirm that suspicion: The Emoji Movie is a waste of time, resources, and a bunch of comedians' voices, plus a premise that actually had the potential to do some small good in the world. It's less of a movie and more of an insult."

ScreenCrush

"It would be fitting if there were no words to describe The Emoji Movie; if the ephemeral experience of consuming this unique entertainment could only be summarized in a couple of small pictures dashed off in a text message. But, no, there are plenty of words that can describe The Emoji Movie. Here are a few of them: Unfunny. Saccharine. Nonsensical. Painful. And, of course, crappy. (If you prefer the poop emoji, that works too.)"

Screen Daily

"A film as mindless and disposable as most smartphone apps (and nowhere near as addictive), The Emoji Movie is a calamity that inadvertently shows how difficult it is to pull off the witty, imaginative world-building that Pixar makes seem so breezy."

CinemaBlend

"The Emoji Movie turned out to be an even worse idea in execution than it did on paper. Its characters are weak, its story lame, and its purpose unclear. Do yourself a favor, and swipe left on this one."

IndieWire

"The Emoji Movie is almost as bad and brutally depressing as everything else in 2017."

Metro

"The Poochie of movies, The Emoji Movie is a not very good idea done poorly. It's like the KFC Double Down: Sure, you could make a sandwich where the buns are flaming hot chicken patties separated by bacon, American cheese and demon sauce, but just because you can do something doesn't mean you should."

Yikes… Well, if self-punishment is your bag, The Emoji Movie - known in the UK as The Emoji Movie: Express Yourself - opens on Friday, August 4 in the UK and on Friday, July 28 in the US.
