The force was strong with Rogue One as it was crowned Best Film at this year’s Three Empire Awards while Tom Hiddleston was deemed a 'hero'.

The Star Wars spin-off story took home three gongs at Sunday night’s bash, which took place at Camden’s Roundhouse for the first time in its history.

Gareth Edwards fought off competition from Taika Waititi and Ken Loach among others to win Best Director while Felicity Jones was crowned Best Actress.

The British star, 33, who plays Gyn Erso in the sci-fi tale beat contenders Natalie Portman, Amy Adams, Ruth Negga and Oscar winning actress Emma Stone to take the title.

Best Actor went to Jones’ former co-star Eddie Redmayne for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The Harry Potter spin-off matched Rogue One’s winning haul after taking home Best Costume Design and Best Hair and Make-Up.

Despite frequently making the headlines over his relationship with Taylor Swift, Tom Hiddleston was branded an Empire Hero.

On collecting his award from Hugh Laurie he said: “They say never meet your heroes. I'm lucky enough that I wouldn't be standing here if I hadn't met mine.

“I've been lucky enough to work with them. And if I haven't worked with them, I've attempted an impersonation of them on the Graham Norton show.”

Sir Patrick Stewart later picked up the Empire Legend gong and Luc Besson was awarded the Empire Inspiration Award. The French director received a standing ovation as he took to the stage, where he joked: “I'm not used to receiving awards. The last one was in '72 at the swimming pool. Why did you have to wait until Brexit to honour a Frenchman?”

I, Daniel Blake was crowned Best British Film and saw actor Dave Johns win Best Male Newcomer. The 61-year-old actor accepted the award with a hilarious acceptance speech, saying:

“Best newcomer at 61, eh? The pensioners are coming! I've been a stand-up comic for thirty years, and nobody knew who I was. This is amazing. Thank you so much. These awards mean that the film is in the media still. It has a very important message.”

The female equivalent went to rising star Anya Taylor-Joy for The Witch which won Best Horror.

The annual event – which sees film fans vote for their winners – welcomed guests including Hayley Atwell, Dame Joan Collins, Laura Carmicheal and Dan Stevens.

Empire’s Editor-In-Chief Terri White said: “Once again, the Three Empire Awards stands out as the awards ceremony that truly reflects the feelings of film fans. From Rogue One to Fantastic Beasts and Deadpool, we were thrilled to be able to recognise the films that packed out cinemas last year.
