Police in Essex are bidding to improve their image – by posing for selfies.

Officers in the city of Chelmsford have gone down a storm on social media after several pictures of them with revellers appeared on Twitter.

These fun-loving cops laughed and joked with party-goers as part of a wider campaign to change the perception of them.

In one tweet, a woman is seeing giving a grinning officer a peck on the cheek while, in another, a policeman has leant his hat to a punter in a fast food restaurant.

Twitter use @search_me_ said: “Definitely the coolest police officers ever,” while another dubbed them “good lads.”

Chief constable of Essex Police, Stephen Kavanagh, said: “Essex Police is 175 years old this year and we’ve always looked for new ways to engage with communities across the county.

“Social media plays a really positive role because it gives us the opportunity to talk about the fantastic work my staff and officers do on behalf of the people of Essex.

“But it’s also about putting a face to local policing, opening up our world to people and listening to what they have to tell us.”

However, the Essex force aren’t the first to adopt the tactic: police in Norfolk similarly won fans after posing for selfies with people out on the town.
