Armed Forces Day is being celebrated across the county this weekend to commemorate serving members, veterans and families.

The annual event happens on the last Saturday of June.

Events are taking place nationally to celebrate all those who make up the armed forces, including those serving, those who have served in the past and military families.

A variety are taking place across Sussex to mark the important day.

Brighton and Hove

Three events are taking place in Brighton and Hove.

On June 29, a variety of activities are taking place at Downs Junior School in Rugby Road, the home of the Take Shelter WW2 Museum.

The event will start at 10am with demonstrations from the Army Cadet Force, wartime dancing tours of the air raid shelter and vintage vehicles.

The event is due to be attended by the mayor of Brighton and Hove alongside other local dignitaries.

Prior to the event, the mayor will be hosting an event in the parlour of Brighton Town Hall for veterans.

Together, they will then travel to the school in a vintage red route-master double decker bus.

On June 30, a service is being held at the Boar’s Head Memorial, Royal Sussex Regiment Memorial in Old Steine Gardens.

Attendees will be commemorating the First World War Battle of Boar’s Head, which was fought on June 30, 1916, and is known as ‘the day that Sussex died’, with the Southdown battalion losing 366 men.

On the same day, an afternoon of free music from the Burgess Hill Military Marching Youth Band will be held at the Brighton and Hove bandstand from 1pm till 3pm.

Worthing

On June 29, Worthing town centre will see a military band march through its streets, followed by musical entertainment, displays from military units, children’s entertainment and more.

Organised by Worthing Veterans Association, the event will take place in Steyne Gardens from 10am.

Littlehampton

Littlehampton Town Council has organised an event in aid of the Royal British Legion at the East Green on the seafront.

Attendees can see vintage military vehicles and memorabilia, as well as watch a parade of veterans, cadets, scouts and bands along South Terrace.

Various bands and choirs will also perform at the event, which starts at 10.30am

Crawley

Crawley Memorial Gardens will see an event organised by Crawley Borough Council and Crawley’s Civil Military Partnership.

From 10.30am, Surrey and Sussex Drum and Bugle Corps will be leading a procession of standard bearers in the gardens, followed by speeches and the raising of the Armed Forces Day flag.

Live music and performances will take place on the bandstand from 11am and there will be stands from military partners such as The Royal British Legion, Army Cadets and Sussex Police.

Eastbourne

Eastbourne and District Veterans Community Interest Company is hosting an event at Five Acre Field, Lottbridge Drove from 10am.

The event will include live music, military vehicles and memorabilia displays, children’s entertainment and more.

Horsham

Organised by Horsham District council and Horsham Royal British Legion, an eventwill take place in Horsham town centre from 11am.
