A man has been rushed to hospital after an incident involving a knife.

Police officers rushed to Lawn Road before 2pm on Monday afternoon after they were alerted to a man seen with the sharp object.

The man – who was spotted in Westridge Road – sustained an injury and had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

The extent of his injuries is yet to be confirmed, according to Hampshire Constabulary.

A large police presence was in place for several hours, with ambulance crews also in attendance.

A cordon was in place from Lawn Road to the junction of Osborne Road South and Westridge Road while the emergency incident was dealt with.

One woman, who has lived in Osborne Road South for 28 years, said: “I heard the commotion from all the way down the road.

"I heard all the sirens but I don’t know what’s happened, there were men shouting.

"An air ambulance helicopter tried to land and there were lots of police. This is uncommon in this area, I don’t see this many police here or this big of a presence."

A man, who has lived in the area for a couple of years, said: "It’s quite scary really to think something has happened near where you live.

"Hopefully we will find out what’s happened soon."

Motorists and drivers were redirected from the address in Southampton until the road reopened after 4pm.

Martyn Cooper, 63, was on Cobden Bridge when he saw an air ambulance land nearby in Riverside Park.

It's not known whether it was carrying a casualty when it took off a short while later.

He said: "I was just really surprised to see it, and stopped to take photographs as it took off at around 4.30pm.

"If anyone was inside, I hope whoever it was gets the treatment they need."

A cordon remained in place outside a semi-detached property in Lawn Road throughout the afternoon.

Officers continued to patrol the area and no arrests have been made.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Constabulary said: “Officers responded to an incident involving a man with a knife at 1.39pm at an address in Westridge Road.

“The man holding the knife sustained an injury and has been taken to hospital for treatment.”

Hampshire Police has said there are no further updates with the investigation as of Tuesday morning, July 2.
