Hollyoaks boss Bryan Kirkwood has shared more details about Edward Hutchinson's upcoming arrival in the village.

Joe McGann has been cast in the role of Edward, who's the estranged father of original character Tony Hutchinson (Nick Pickard).

The new character, who's a successful surgeon, will be the show's latest supervillain and has been tipped for huge storylines in Hollyoaks' 25th anniversary year in 2020.

Edward's first scenes come while Tony is still trapped on Breda McQueen's pig farm. In his son's absence, he'll be worming his way into the Hutchinson family – setting the stage for some big dramas to come. But should they really trust him?

Speaking to Digital Spy, Kirkwood explained: "Brian Edward Hutchinson was an off-screen character for the first few years of the show. He abandoned his son when Tony was in his early 20s. Tony hasn't seen him since.

"Now he returns, calling himself Edward. He's had some kind of breakdown and he's reinvented himself. We learn where he's been and what he's been up to. He's returned to the medical profession, where he was as a younger man.

"Edward is a very high-status, very strident leading man – and he's here to lay claim to his family in the absence of Tony. He arrives after discovering that Harry – his grandson that he never met – is dead."

Kirkwood added: "He's here to find out what's happened to Tony and he makes an instant connection with Diane, Dee Dee, Ant and Rose.

"Edward is a really exciting new character and Joe McGann is just fantastic."

Hollyoaks' recent autumn trailer revealed that Harry's body will soon be found, after he became the eighth victim of Breda in July.

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
