Anna Friel has called the long wait for Marcella's third season "frustrating".

ITV's crime thriller from The Bridge writer Hans Rosenfeldt and Nicola Larder was commissioned back in 2018, but those episodes will only now be airing on UK TV.

In this new series, Marcella is working in Northern Ireland undercover, where her affiliation with a powerful crime syndicate takes its toll on her state of mind.

When Digital Spy recently spoke with Anna Friel about returning to Marcella, she talked about the significant delays to getting the third season before cameras.

"It's been really, really frustrating, and also to not be able to tell the wonderful, lovely, supportive fanbase exactly when it was coming out, because the schedule just kept changing all the time, due to the virus and the advertisers and so many different elements," she told us.

The actress went on: "I was just hoping there wouldn't be too many spoilers... But hopefully it's worth the wait."

Friel has been very busy during the break in filming Marcella, shooting the LGBTQ+ drama Butterfly as well as the horror adaptation of Clive Barker's Books of Blood for Hulu in the US.

Newcomers to Marcella this year will include Bohemian Rhapsody actor Aaron McCusker, Casualty veteran Kelly Gough and Chernobyl's Michael Colgan as the series moves to its new Northern Ireland setting.

Marcella is set to return to ITV for its third series on Tuesday, January 26 at 9pm.
