A neuroscientist has shared the three supplements that can help with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Robert Love, based in the US, specialises in helping people with and preventing Alzheimer’s.

In a video from March, Robert detailed three supplements which should be on people’s radar. He said: “This one is really powerful, it is L-Tyrosine. This is an amino acid that is a precursor to dopamine. A lot of the ADHD drugs like Ritalin and Adderall and Vyvanse, these increase dopamine activity, or dopaminergic activity.

“So by taking L-Tyrosine as a supplement, this gives your brain and body the raw materials to manufacture more dopamine, and it’s a lot less harsh on the brain, a lot less straining on the brain than prescription drugs.”

Robert continued: “Supplement number two is L-Theanine, this is an amino acid found in green tea and black tea that helps reduce stress and helps increase focus. So you may notice when you drink green tea you get that caffeine buzz but it’s not jittery, because the L-Theanine helps relax you.

“So if you have ADHD and you feel anxious or uncomfortable, L-Theanine could be very helpful. It is also very helpful with sleep.”

Lastly, Robert explained: “This one is my favourite because it’s so good for the brain and the body, it is Lion’s Mane. Lion’s Mane is a medicinal mushroom that is used in ancient Chinese and Japanese medicine.”

The expert listed the benefits of Lion’s Mane, which included improving memory, helps the growth of new brain cells, reduces stress and anxiety, and can help with sleep.

According to the NHS, some studies have suggested supplements of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids may be beneficial for people with ADHD. However it’s important to remember that supporting evidence is limited.

It’s recommended you speak to your GP before taking any supplements, because some can react unpredictably with medicine or make it less effective. You should also remember that some supplements should not be taken long term, as they can reach dangerous levels in your body.
