A sleep expert is warning Brits against following a popular 'heatwave freezer hack' as it could be doing you more harm than good. The 'hack' circulating on social media sees people put their bedding in a freezer.

However, sleep expert James Wilson, also known as The Sleep Geek, is urging people to avoid doing this. James has been seen on the likes of BBC Breakfast, This Morning, Sky Sports and Channel 4, he is also the founder of Kipmate.

On the surface, introducing something icy cold into your bedroom to counter the night-time heat during a heatwave might seem like a stroke of genius. Yet, James has highlighted several key reasons why we should keep our freezers for food rather than fabric.

In a TikTok video, he said: "People seem to be obsessed about putting things in the freezer to help them sleep better. Now, it doesn't really help us sleep better and there's a couple of reasons why."

He quipped that those who can fit an entire duvet in their freezer must have "massive freezers". But then he delved into why this cooling 'hack' could actually backfire.

He explained: "Shocking your body with the extreme cold, it doesn't relax you. It puts your body into more of a wake up mode whereas lukewarm water slowly helps your body cool down."

James also highlighted the fact that, once you fall asleep, the inevitable will occur. He added: "If you put something in your bed that has been in the freezer, that will melt.

"When it melts, that moisture will be in your sleeping environment which is bad for two reasons. One being that moisture during the night will heat up and make you feel hotter. The second being a soggy mess in your bed - and nobody wants that."
