F1 qualifying LIVE: Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton fight for pole position at Silverstone
Follow live F1 coverage as the British Grand Prix weekend continues with qualifying at Silverstone on Saturday. Last time out, Max Verstappen claimed his sixth victory of the season at the Canadian Grand Prix, holding off a late charge from Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. The reigning world champion’s lead at the top of the Championship leaderboard is now 46 points from team-mate Sergio Perez, who failed to finish in Montreal.
Lewis Hamilton finished third - only his second podium of the season - while fellow British team-mate George Russell came home in fourth. Both the Silver Arrows and Ferrari - with Charles Leclerc having had a month to forget - will be striving to get back on the podium this weekend. Hamilton won last season’s race, after crashing with Verstappen in a memorable moment on the opening lap at Copse corner. It was the Brit’s eighth triumph on home soil.
Championship leader Verstappen led a Red Bull one-two in third and final practice ahead of Perez. Leclerc was third with the Mercedes pair of Russell and Hamilton fourth and fifth on the timesheets.

Qualifying at Silverstone starts at 3pm (BST)
Max Verstappen dominant in third practice, with team-mate Sergio Perez 2nd; Russell 4th, Hamilton 5th
Verstappen’s reaction:
17:23 , Kieran Jackson
He said out on track: “Q3 can always be a bit of a lottery. We have a good race car in the dry and in the wet.
“It’s not only about the first lap and also about the tyre management but yeah looking forward to tomorrow.”
It was quite a tricky Qualifying with the rain, but to be on the front row here is good for us. Tomorrow is when it really counts and we have a good race car. So we’ll be there @redbullracing 👊
Congrats @Carlossainz55 on your first pole 🤝 pic.twitter.com/LjPuSsfUNR— Max Verstappen (@Max33Verstappen) July 2, 2022
As for Hamilton...
16:50 , Kieran Jackson
The last time Lewis Hamilton wasn’t on the front row at Silverstone was when he was on row three after a wet qualifying in 2014 in the year he won his second World Championship - but he won the race.
Clutching at straws a little? Perhaps... after a promising first few sessions for Mercedes, Hamilton 5th and Russell 8th is not the outcome Toto Wolff would’ve been looking for.
Carlos Sainz takes first career pole position for British Grand Prix
16:40 , Karl Matchett
Carlos Sainz edged out Max Verstappen to claim the first pole position of his Formula One career for Sunday’s British Grand Prix.
In the rain at Silverstone, Ferrari’s Sainz excelled to see off world champion Verstappen by just 0.072 seconds, with Charles Leclerc third in the other scarlet car in a thrilling qualifying session.
Sergio Perez took fourth, with Lewis Hamilton a full second back in fifth – one spot ahead of compatriot Lando Norris, who was sixth for McLaren. Hamilton’s Mercedes team-mate George Russell finished eighth.
“Thanks everyone for staying out there in this rain,” said Sainz. “Spaniards struggle with the rain, but you guys are used to it.
“I put together a lap, I did not think it was something special, but it was pole position and that came as a bit of a surprise.
“The pace has been there all weekend, but if I base myself on my practice pace, we should be in a good position to hold on to first.”
Carlos Sainz takes first career pole position for British Grand Prix
Sainz on his pole position:
16:34 , Kieran Jackson
“A pole in the wet always feels good, it’s true I’ve always been competitive in wet conditions but so are the drivers next to me...
“Today was a good example of how tight it was between us, every lap is a fight, the balance in the wet was good, it’s all about the tyres honestly and if I can make the tyres work.”
Verstappen on being booed by the crowd:
16:25 , Kieran Jackson
“It was disappointing I don’t know why they did that. But maybe some of them don’t like me but that’s fine, they all have their own opinions. I don’t care...”
Sainz in his post-qualifying press conference:
16:23 , Kieran Jackson
“Honestly I had no idea where I was going to be. It didn’t feel amazing, I made a few mistakes, but I had a lap on the board but with no battery in the last couple of straights I was convinced it wasn’t going to be enough, but that’s why I was surprised! In these conditions it’s about putting a lap on the board and not about the optimal or best lap of your life.”
16:09 , Kieran Jackson
Charles Leclerc post-Q3: “I’m happy for Carlos, he did a great job today. I didn’t deserve to be on pole but P3 is a good position to be for the race. The pace is there so everything should go well and obviously time management will be a thing too.”
16:08 , Kieran Jackson
Verstappen is notably getting booed by the home crowd, as he is interviewed following his second spot: “Q3 can always be a bit of a lottery. We have a good race car in the dry and in the wet. It’s not only about the first lap and also about the tyre management but yeah looking forward to tomorrow.”
16:07 , Kieran Jackson
Sainz on his first pole - in his 150th race: “It was a good lap but I was struggling a lot in the standing water. Also it was tough in the intermediates but I did a lap which I thought was nothing special but just get it on the board and pole position!
“The pace has been there all weekend apart from FP3 which we’ve corrected from qualifying. We should be in a good position to hold on to it. I will try my best of course!”

15:28 , Kieran Jackson
Latifi the first out on track at the start of Q2.

Who will be the top-10 to compete for the top spots in Q3?!
WEATHER UPDATE: Light rain to continue throughout qualifying
15:25 , Kieran Jackson
George Russell has just been told that light rain is set to continue throughout Q2 and Q3, gradually decreasing in intensity...
Albon, meanwhile, is livid at his team over the radio, insisting he had no grip due to doing cool down laps!
Albon didn’t make it, but Latifi did. Q2 to start shortly!
Q1: Time up!
15:20 , Kieran Jackson
Nicholas Latifi qualifies for Q2 for the first time this season, just ahead of his team-mate Alex Albon!
Those who have been knocked out: Albon, Magnussen, Vettel, Schumacher, Stroll.

Q1: 12 minutes to go
15:07 , Kieran Jackson
Verstappen, Leclerc, Hamilton and Russell the top-four at the moment but, meanwhile, the Alpines of Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso are still in the pits - do they know something we don’t?!
A reminder: only the bottom five cars in Q1 are eliminated from qualifying...
Q1 is underway!
15:01 , Kieran Jackson
About half the cars were waiting for at least a minute or two before 3:00 - and it’s the Williams of Nicholas Latifi who leads the pack out! Every car is on the intermediate tyre.
Don’t go anywhere!
It wouldn’t be the Great British summer without a downpour!
14:59 , Kieran Jackson
It’s pretty torrential out there now, with fans in the grandstands getting a drenching at the moment!
Opportunities aplenty across the pit wall now, how long will the queue be at the front of the pit lane? Intermediates to start with, before the track is full wet...
The rain has most definitely arrived!
14:52 , Kieran Jackson
Heavy rain expected around 2:55 at Silverstone, five minutes before the start of Q1...
There may well be a big rush coming out of the pit lane at 3:00 if the track is still at all dry. Cue drama. Stay tuned to keep track of all of it!

Friday 1 July 2022 12:15 , Kieran Jackson

The local police force - who are in charge of policing for this weekend’s event with 400,000 spectators expected over the the three days - have sent a stern warning to the group and are willing to communicate about faciliating a “peaceful protest.”

Lewis Hamilton says F1’s ‘older voices’ should no longer be given a platform
Friday 1 July 2022 11:35 , Kieran Jackson
In response to Piquet’s comments, and that of Bernie Ecclestone yesterday, Lewis Hamilton did not beat around the bush in the pre-race press conference.
Hamilton has called for Bernie Ecclestone and Sir Jackie Stewart to be censored, and declared “enough is enough” after Nelson Piquet’s racial slur.
The seven-time world champion was speaking ahead of this weekend’s British Grand Prix – days after 69-year-old Piquet’s offensive reference to Hamilton emerged from a podcast recorded last November.
Triple world champion Stewart, 83, said recently that Hamilton should “resign” after struggling for results this season, while Ecclestone, 91, told ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Thursday that he would “take a bullet” for Vladimir Putin, also describing the Russian president as a “first-class person”.

Max Verstappen believes Nelson Piquet is ‘not a racist’ but agrees his choice of words was ‘very offensive’
Friday 1 July 2022 11:20 , Kieran Jackson
Three-time world champion Nelson Piquet was widely condemned earlier this week for using racial language to describe Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton in an interview - he has since apologised and says his comments were mistranslated.
Piquet is the father of Max Verstappen’s girlfriend Kelly Piquet and the Red Bull driver - who has “spent time” with the Brazilian - says the 69-year-old did not mean to use a racial slur.
“Everyone is against racism - I think it’s very straight, there’s nothing more you can make of that,” Verstappen said, ahead of the British Grand Prix.
“I think the wording which was used, even though of course with different kinds of cultures and things probably they said when they were little and younger, was not correct. Let it be a lesson for the future not to use that word because it’s very offensive and especially nowadays it gains even more traction.”

Toto Wolff warns that Lewis Hamilton ‘becomes unbeatable’ when adversity strikes
Friday 1 July 2022 11:05 , Kieran Jackson
The grid may need to watch out this weekend...
Lewis Hamilton will thrive on the adversity of Formula One’s racism storm by becoming “unbeatable” at this weekend’s British Grand Prix, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has said.
Wolff also demanded the sport’s bosses, and rival teams join Mercedes in “putting your money where your mouth is” to combat racism. The build-up to Hamilton’s home race has been overshadowed by the emergence of a racist slur used by triple world champion Nelson Piquet against the British driver.
Piquet, 69, has since apologised but claimed the offensive word was mistranslated.
But Wolff said: “Lewis thrives on adversity and when things are being thrown at him, that is when he becomes unbeatable. The racist comments that have been made is not something he would consider as from credible voices.
