Family's message as 'lovely boy', 14, missing from Crosby beach

A 14-year-old boy who went missing in the Mersey near Crosby beach has been named, as his family shared their fears for him.

Emergency services were called to the beach at around 7pm on Sunday, June 30, following reports a teenage boy had vanished near the radar tower.

The call-out sparked a huge response from police, fire and rescue services, the coastguard and the RNLI. The path to the radar tower was closed off and police officers directed passers-by away from the area as the search continued.

The teen, now named as Daniel Halliday has not been located and yesterday (July 1), the coastguard confirmed the search had been stood down after 15 hours.

His family are being supported by specially trained Merseyside Police officers and in a statement have asked for privacy at this difficult time.

Their statement said: “Our worst fear is that this tragic accident has taken our lovely boy from us. Daniel was jumping waves with his big brother who tried to save him but the current was too strong.

“Daniel is a loving son, brother, cousin, nephew and grandson.

“The family are all devastated, and we hope that we will be allowed our privacy at this time. Thank you.”
