Fire crews are continuing to battle a blaze at a Linwood battery recycling plant as commuters and locals have been warned to shut windows and 'stay inside'.

Emergency services were called to the WEEE Solutions site on Burnbrae Road at around 9pm on Sunday (June 23) following reports of a fire in a commercial building. Scottish Fire and Rescue crews have been at the scene since around 9.12pm and six appliances and two height vehicles remain at the scene on Monday as they work to extinguish the fire.

Smoke can still be seen rising from the specialist electrical and battery recycling treatment facility near Paisley. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Officials are continuing to warn locals to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed as a precaution. Motorists traveling through areas of smoke are also being told to keep windows closed and to turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed.

Police Scotland have closed roads and cycle paths close to the blaze and have asked local residents to avoid the area until further notice.

It comes as residents previously reported hearing 'pops and explosions' from the site as smoke could be seen as far as Glasgow City Centre. One resident told Glasgow Live: "I was scared with the amount of smoke coming off the building and the loud banging noises coming from it. I have a baby at home so it made me very concerned."

Area Commander David Murdoch said: “We continue to work with the recycling centre and partner agencies to minimise the disruption to the local community and will continue to provide updates. While smoke continues to be visible, we would ask that residents remain indoors and keep windows and doors closed as a precaution.

“If travelling through smoke, motorists should keep windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed.”

Judith Moore, Scottish Environment Protection Agency’s (SEPA) National Duty Manager, said: “Following initial reports at around 11pm on Sunday evening of a significant fire at Linwood Industrial Estate, Paisley, SEPA officers deployed and worked across the night to support SFRS as part of a multi-agency response.

“SEPA officers remain in attendance at the site of WEEE Solutions Ltd, a specialist waste electrical and battery recycling treatment facility at Burnbrae Road, Linwood.

“Residents are urged to continue to follow the SFRS for the latest information and advice.

“Environmental impacts can be reported at sepa.org.uk/report.”
