Fire Engulfs Rennes Police Station as Macron Signs Pension Reform Into Law

A police station in Rennes, France, was set on fire on Friday, April 14, following the country’s constitutional body’s approval of the change.

Violent demonstrations erupted on Friday evening, including attacks on Rennes’ tourist office, shops, and banks, according to Actu. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said the incidents in Rennes were “unacceptable” and that the “perpetrators will be prosecuted”.

On Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron’s unpopular plan to raise France’s retirement age from 62 to 64 was enacted into law.

By Saturday afternoon, several hundred protesters rallied against the pension reform on Saturday afternoon at the Place de la République in Rennes, Actu reported.
