Guildford’s HSBC bank has reopened after a three-and-a-half-month closure for refurbishment that the company said planned to make it a flagship high street branch. It comes as bosses at HSBC confirmed the company’s Farnborough location has now also closed for a similar, shorter facelift.

HSBC on North Street in Guildford reopened on Tuesday (June 25) after a nearly 18-week closure that began at the end of February. The bank said its investment follows a commitment from HSBC UK to not announce any branch closures in 2024.

HSBC UK’s local director, Rob Clapham, said the company is continuing to invest millions of pounds into its network of branches. He commented: “This significant investment of hundreds of thousands of pounds in our Guildford branch will create a greatly improved and enhanced experience for our customers.

“The changes we have made to our Guildford branch will provide customers with a much more modern and better-designed branch, providing improved accessibility for customers in addition to the latest technology.” Photos from inside the branch show new seating areas and booths across two floors.

Mr Clapham added: “I am extremely proud of the improvements we have made that will benefit our customers, but I am also proud of the changes that have been made which will also provide a better and more comfortable place for our branch colleagues to work, which is extremely important to us.”

The Guildford branch refurbishment saw work to update the building's exterior including new signage as well as a completely reformatted interior, full redecoration, and new furniture. HSBC outlined this includes a new banking hall layout with better areas for customer service, better and more adaptable facilities for disabled customers, a seminar area, and state-of-the-art cash machines.

HSBC added that the branch will continue to have a Safe Space for anybody in immediate need of a discreet space to reach out to friends and family or to contact specialist support services. A ‘pop-up branch’ was made available during the closure at Guildford Library.

The refresh of the HSBC branch in Farnborough includes external building work and will see the branch closed for one month. The bank closed its doors on Monday, June 24 and is expected to reopen on Friday, July 26.

HSBC said customers will be able to access community pop-up events at Princes Mead Shopping Centre in Farnborough (GU14 6YA) during the temporary closure. These will be held on June 28 and July 2, 3, 5, 9, 10, 12, 17, and 18 from 10am until 4pm.

Note: This story has been updated, having previously said that the Farnham (not Farnborough) bank was closing briefly for a refurbishment
