Floyd Mayweather helps inspire Liverpool MMA show as former UFC fighter returns

An ex-boxer was inspired by Floyd Mayweather to promote an MMA show in Liverpool on May 17th

The event promoted by Declan Kenna for Cage Legacy MMA will see the return of ex-UFC star Chris Fishgold, as well as former Cage Warriors champions Lee Chadwick.

The show is set to take place at the Dome Grand Central on May 17th.

“We’ve been doing cage legacy in Ireland for a couple of years. It’s been flying. We always wanted to expand by going to the UK and Europe and I’ve been to Liverpool a couple of times because it’s basically like another Dublin. Once I went to Liverpool I was like, ‘This is where we want to do it.’” said Kenna.

“You have other lads, who are high- level like Lee Chadwick, Chris Fishgold, and Chris Stringer… we are trying to build a massive card for this one."

Chadwick and Fishgold both possess years of experience with the latter competing in the UFC as recently as 2020. Chadwick’s greatest night came at the M&S Bank Arena (then Echo Arena) in 2017 when he secured the middleweight title in front of his home crowd.

Ticket sales are already progressing with fans excited about the prospect of MMA returning to Liverpool.

“About 25% of tickets have sold already. They are on sale through Skiddle for anyone who’s looking for them. This will be a sell-out with the names that are on the card. After that, the only other way will be pay-per-view.

Kenna recently laced up his gloves on Floyd Mayweather’s undercard at Wembley Arena in February 2023. He cites the American as an inspiration for his fighting and promotional career..

“I’ve done boxing and kickboxing when I was a kid. When I grew up, I started hanging around the streets, doing the wrong things. It took me a couple of years to say, ‘This is it, I want to go back to training.’ I took up MMA and it was like a new world as I’d only done striking before that. I’ve also coached for a couple of years.

“I went back fighting, I fought on a Floyd Mayweather undercard, then at the 3arena. That was some buzz. Growing up you dream about stuff like that. You can make your dreams a reality if you say, ‘I’m gonna put all my way into this.’ There was a pull-out two weeks before, and then it happened, I got a phone call.

“I was talking to Mayweather… when I go to Las Vegas my plan will be to go in and see the lads.

“Floyd was exactly how I’d thought he would be, he did his own thing but there was a gang of them, he had like two plane loads of people.

“I would take a lot of inspiration from him (Floyd Mayweather) when I was training and promoting. You look up to lads like Eddie Hearn and Barry Hearn. You have to study what you are doing, you have to know what you are doing.”

Cage Legacy are hoping to secure a TV deal for the event with DAZN as the front-runner, currently.

Tickets are available on Skiddle.
