The BBC is giving the classic con-man tale a twist by not depicting the character as the charming hero but the villain that needs to have a reckoning.

The Following Events are Based on a Pack of Lies centres on two women: Cheryl (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), a bestselling fantasy author and recent widow, and Alice (Rebekah Staton), an undervalued PA who lives in a bungalow with her young son, partner, and father.

Cheryl and Alice become inexplicably connected with one another through Rob (Alistair Petrie), a charming con-man from Alice's past who has recently come into Cheryl's life, and who becomes the focus of both their rage when he begins a new con.

The Following Events are Based on a Pack of Lies is led by Alistair Petrie, Rebekah Staton and Marianne Jean-Baptiste who take on the roles of Rob, Alice and Cheryl, respectively.

They are joined in the cast by a plethora of British icons of the stage and screen, including Sir Derek Jacobi, Romola Garai and Julian Barratt. The supporting cast is rounded out by Karl Johnson and Ellie Haddington.

Barratt plays Alice's magician husband Benjy, while Garai takes on the role of Alice's boss Juno Fish and Jacobi portrays academic Sir Ralph Unwin, who is also being duped by Rob.
