Former Coventry City favourite set for whopping ‘six-year’ contract at Midland rivals

Former Coventry City favourite Ian Maatsen is reportedly heading for Midlands rivals Aston Villa on a whopping six-year contract!

The 22-year-old Dutch wing-back, who is currently on international duty with the Netherlands at the Euros, is claimed to be heading for Villa Park after the Premier League club have ‘reached an agreement’ with Chelsea.

The Athletic claims the two clubs have agreed a fee just above the £35m release clause which was available to Borussia Dortmund – where Maatsen spent last season on loan, including playing in the Champions League final – earlier this summer. However, after that specific clause expired, Villa have swooped in and agreed a deal, the reports says.

The attack-minded defender – who spent an impressive season on loan with the Sky Blues during the 2021/22 campaign – is said to have his personal terms in place on a six-year contract, which Villa will now work to finalise. Unai Emery is a huge fan of the left-back and paid close attention to the full-back’s impressive performances at Dortmund last season.

Maatsen spent the second half of the campaign at the Bundesliga side after struggling for game time at Chelsea.

Maatsen’s contract at Chelsea had been scheduled to end in June 2025 but was extended by 12 months in January before he joined Dortmund on loan.

He made 16 league appearances for the club and played a key role in their run to the Champions League final.

Maatsen previously spent the 2022-23 campaign on loan at Burnley, helping them win the Championship.
