Sadiq Khan has promised to expand London's existing Superloop of express bus routes if he were to be re-elected as mayor on May 2. The scheme is designed to make it easier for people to navigate outer boroughs, especially after the Mayor of London expanded the capital's ULEZ in August 2023.

Currently, the Superloop, comprised of the SL1, SL2, SL3, SL5, SL7, SL8, SL9 and the SL10, circles the capital. There are also a couple of routes that go in and out of the centre of the city - the SL8 between Uxbridge and White City and the SL6 between Croydon and Russell Square (this only runs at peak times).

Now, new proposals have been issued by the mayor, along with a draft map that includes several new suggested routes. All routes will be subject to consultation.

Planned new routes

Initial plans include these new routes:

  • Harrow to Barnet via Edgware

  • South Havering to Leytonstone via Romford

  • Hounslow to Hammersmith

  • Streatham to Eltham via Catford

  • Ealing to Kingston via Richmond

Places that could miss out

However, these means some areas now included within the ULEZ could miss out on the speedier services. These include swathes of North, East, South and West London.

In the east, Havering would get its first Superloop services, but only in Romford and South Havering. It seems as though buses might not call at places like Collier Row, Hornchurch and Upminster.

In the south east, Orpington, Chelsfield, Biggin Hill and New Addington may be missed, according to the map released by Mr Khan's team. In the south, the same might be true of Purley and Kenley.

Further to the west, Chessington, Tolworth, Surbiton. In the west, it looks like Feltham, West Drayton, Hayes, Harefield, Northwood, may not have any Superloop services.

In the north, places like Bullsmoor could miss out as buses travel between Enfield and Chingford.

Superloop set up to provide 'efficient and direct services'

TfL says that the express routes have been designed to terminate at the large town centres and large public transport hubs. The routes will be monitored when in service.

Bosses add that the Superloop will provide 'efficient and direct services', and they do not want to make its routes too 'indirect'. This would not meet the aim of providing a direct route.

The mayor said last week: “The success of Superloop is one of my proudest achievements as mayor, connecting Londoners to key locations in outer London and getting more people onto public transport. It has been nothing short of game changer - making journeys quicker and more convenient.

"The Superloop has been such a success so far, I want Londoners all across the city to now reap the benefits. The proposed new routes will all be subject to consultation with Londoners but I’ve asked TfL to start looking at how they could best serve key locations – whether popular town centres, other transport hubs or public services like hospitals."
