The fun Essex petting zoo where you can walk an alpaca and meet pigs and goats

Known for being affectionate and friendly in nature, alpacas are present in many petting zoos due to how adorable they are. But did you know there is a farm in Essex where you can take one on a walk?

Lathcoats Farm in Galleywood, Chelmsford, is a fourth-generation family fruit farm growing over 40 varieties of delicious English apples, and a wide variety of summer fruits for PYO - but is also home to a huge variation of animals which you can get up close and personal with, as part of All Things Alpaca.

There are lots of experiences at All Things Alpaca for everyone to take part in - from miniature pig meet and greets, junior farmer and pygmy goat meet and greets. But the star of the show is undoubtedly the opportunity to grab a lead and take an alpaca on a walk!

There are seven alpacas living at Lathcoats - Popcorn, Panda, Poncho, Pickle, Pedro, Puzzle and Pluto - who visitors can meet, each with their own fun personality.

The alpaca trek includes a 15 minute health and safety brief and 45 minutes trekking through the beautiful orchards at Lathcoats Farm. It makes for plenty of photo opportunities, and the chance to learn all about the farm’s wonderful alpacas and local wildlife.

One person commented on Facebook: “We had the best time meeting these gorgeous alpacas. It was interesting to hear about their different personalities and they were so laid back around my little one. Can't wait to go back and say hello again soon!”

It costs £32 per adult (16+yrs) leading an alpaca each, and £22 per child (8-15yrs) leading an alpaca with one accompanying adult.
