Aston Villa have been one of the busiest Premier League clubs at the start of the summer transfer window as they look to sell and buy before the end of the month.

Tim Iroegbunam was first out the door as he completed a £9m move to Everton last week, before Lewis Dobbin joined Villa from the Toffees for £10m. Meanwhile, Juventus found an agreement with Villa to sign Douglas Luiz for €50m, while Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea will join Unai Emery's squad in a separate deal worth €22m.

Villa are also selling Omari Kellyman to Chelsea for £19m, while Ian Maatsen is poised to sign a six-year contract with Villa in a deal worth £37.5m from the Blues. More ins and outs are expected in the coming weeks as Emery looks to shape his squad before the start of the new Premier League season, which gets underway against West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday, August 17.

Premier League teams are allowed to name a squad of 25 players, with a minimum of eight that are classed as homegrown players. A homegrown player is a player who, irrespective of nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to The FA or the FA of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons before his 21st birthday.

In the Premier League, a player counts as homegrown when they have been registered to an English or Welsh club for a period of three seasons (or years) before his 21st birthday. Villa currently have 13 senior players who are classed as homegrown, but that number could reduce after the end of the window.

In fact, it'll change in a matter of days as Ross Barkley and Iling-Junior sign on. Luton Town agreed a £5m fee with Villa for Barkley earlier this month and he is expected to pen a contract in the coming days.

Villa also have a strong interest in England international Conor Gallagher, who could leave Chelsea for around £50m this summer. The 24-year-old was not willing to decide on his future before the end of the month as he wants to fully concentrate on Euro 2024.

Emery is a huge fan of Gallagher, and after losing a top player like Luiz, Villa could be tempted to bolster their midfield even further. Meanwhile, Chelsea were granted permission to speak with Jhon Duran earlier this month, but it appears the Blues are no closer to signing the striker.

Villa had agreed a deal with Chelsea, but perhaps Duran won't get his dream move after all. There is no shortage of interest in Duran from elsewhere, which could open the door for another addition in the forward area for Villa.

Hoffenheim's Max Beier is of interest with the striker having a release clause of around £25m this summer. He scored 16 goals in the Bundesliga last season and is also on Chelsea's radar.

Cameron Archer is returning to Villa this summer following Sheffield United's relegation to the Championship, but he is expected to depart again. Philippe Coutinho has reportedly mutually terminated his deal with the club.

In defence, Alex Moreno could return to Spain this summer once Maatsen signs, while there could be fresh speculation over Lucas Digne's future. The left-back enjoyed an excellent campaign last term, but there were doubts over his future 12 months ago considering he is one of the club's highest earners.

Talking of which, Diego Carlos could be on the move with Villa willing to listen to offers for the Brazilian after he joined two years ago under Steven Gerrard. Leander Dendoncker will be allowed to depart on a permanent basis.

Villa have been credited with an interest in Jean-Claire Todibo from Nice. The 24-year-old centre-back would be a strong addition to Emery's backline if Carlos was to depart.

Elsewhere, Villa will look to secure loan moves for their youngsters, possibly including 18-year-old Kosta Nedeljkovic, depending on Emery's assessment over pre-season. The same goes for Lino Sousa and Dobbin. Viljami Sinisalo and Filip Marschall could also seal loans again.

The business discussed would leave Emery with a 24-man squad and 11 homegrown players. Here's what it could look like...

Goalkeepers: Emiliano Martinez*, Joe Gauci, Robin Olsen.

Defenders: Matty Cash*, Ezri Konsa*, Lucas Digne, Pau Torres, Tyrone Mings*, Ian Maatsen*, Jean-Claire Todibo.

Midfielders: John McGinn, Youri Tielemans, Jacob Ramsey*, Boubacar Kamara, Ross Barkley*, Conor Gallagher*, Enzo Barrenechea, Iling-Junior*.

Attackers: Ollie Watkins*, Moussa Diaby, Emi Buendia, Morgan Rogers*, Leon Bailey, Max Beier.
