As the gardening season takes root across Britain, enthusiasts are eagerly tending to their flower beds and vegetable patches.

However, the perennial problem of garden pests such as slugs and snails, which have a penchant for devouring young plants, continues to vex many green-fingered Brits. But now, an inventive gardener has wowed social media users by revealing his simple and cost-effective 65p trick to deter these unwelcome visitors.

The clever gardener, who goes by @bilgemehmet23 online, is well-known for his lifestyle and gardening hacks. In a viral TikTok video that garnered over 124,000 likes, he shows how a sprinkle of common table salt around the edge of an inverted plant pot, its bottom removed, acts as a formidable barrier against the molluscs.

Explaining his technique, he said: "I put that around here really cheap salt, the cheapest salt you can get. And I just go round the edges like I showed this so many times guys, honestly."

He then places the altered pot over his plants, pressing it into the soil, and adds: "I've got it central. Give it a little push-down. There you go. Leave it. And that will protect my plant and I'll be able to water it individually.", reports the Express.

Reflecting on his previous battles with slugs, he shared: "People laugh at me but I've had slug problems before and I just had an idea one day I said let's just try it. And it worked for us."

An off-camera voice backs his statement, asserting: "If we didn't put this on, by the morning, we'd have a slug problem again."

This straightforward yet potent trick left TikTok users impressed and keen to experiment with it in their own gardens. An enthusiastic user responded: "I've used this and I thank you. GREAT ADVICE."

Furthermore, one said, "I've got a big slug problem."

while another praised: "Damn, that's smart. Thanks guys," and a different user confirmed: "It does work."

A user commented and admired, stating: "This is genius."
