A road in Bath is expected to be closed for several days following a gas leak. Engineers are working to repair the leak, which was found on a gas pipe running underneath St Saviours Road in the city. Wales and West Utilities estimates the road will be closed until Friday, July 5.

The road runs through Larkhill and is closed at the junction with the A4 London Road. Traffic monitor Inrix reports: "St Saviours Road one way street closed due to gas leak from A4 / London Road to Claremont Road. Traffic is coping well."

A spokesperson for Wales and West Utilities said engineers are working to repair the leak as fast and safely as possible, but that holes will need filling and the new surface will need to set before the road is properly reopened. This is expected to be sometime before Friday evening.

Alan Vickerstaff, Wales & West Utilities Gas emergency service manager for Bath, said: "We are working in the St Saviours Road area of Bath to repair a small leak on a gas pipe running beneath the road. In order to keep the local community, road users and our colleagues safe while we work, we have closed St Saviours Road at its junction with London Road. A diversion route is clearly signposted.

“Our engineers are working as safely and as quickly as possible to fix the leak. Once we have done so, we will then need to fill in the holes that we have dug and give the new surface time to set. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we expect to complete the work and reopen the road by Friday evening, July 5.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of local residents and road users while we carry out this essential repair. Whilst it is important that we fix this leak, it does not pose any serious safety concerns and there is no impact on local gas supplies.”
