Gavin & Stacey creator Ruth Jones has joked there will be shock deaths in the eagerly anticipated Christmas special.

After months of speculation, it was announced earlier this year that beloved sitcom Gavin & Stacey would return for one final episode this Christmas.

It has been five years since the show's last episode, which ended on a jaw-dropping cliffhanger when Nessa got down on one knee and proposed to Smithy.

Fans have been speculating what the final episode – for real, this time – will cover, with Ruth (who plays Nessa) revealing what we can expect as the Shipman and West clans gather for another chaotic festive period.

"A couple of people at the stage door say, 'What’s going to happen, is Smithy going to say yes?'," she told fellow Gavin & Stacey star Rob Brydon on The Rob Brydon Podcast.

"So, I go, 'There’s going to be a helicopter crash, most of the cast are going to get killed', and I just make stuff up!"

It comes after the star criticised fans who leaked news of the return of Gavin & Stacey as "mean."

"It was unfortunate, because James and I wanted to give everybody a nice surprise and I think it was really mean that they leaked it," she said during an interview on Radio 4.

"It meant that I had to lie to people, to friends and family, because they were all saying, 'Is it happening?', and the reality is that until you have your cast booked, budget worked out, all of those things, you cannot say categorically that it is going to happen."

Joanna Page has confirmed her return to the role of Stacey, while Alison Steadman, who played Gavin's mum Pamela, also said she will appear.

Alison also confirmed Larry Lamb will reprise his role as Pam's husband Mick for the Christmas episode.

Gavin & Stacey series 1-3 are available to stream on BBC iPlayer. The Gavin & Stacey 2024 Christmas special will air on Christmas Day on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
