Gay couple not allowed to share dessert because it doesn't 'look right'

A gay couple were not allowed to share an ice cream sundae because a waiter said it “wouldn't look right” with two men eating from the same bowl, according to reports.

Ron Gage, 55 and his partner Henry McKinnon, 58, were dining at the Prime Rib restaurant in Washington D.C. when they were denied a sharing dessert, the Washington Post reported.

“When it came time for dessert, we asked for one sundae with two spoons,” Mr Gage told the Post.

The waiter “said he would bring it in two separate dishes. He said ‘It wouldn’t look right with two gentlemen eating out of the same sundae. It doesn’t go with the ambiance of the restaurant.’”

Mr McKinnon added: “It just took us back to such a shameful place, in a way.”

The Prime Rib advertises itself as one of the “top 5 romantic restaurants in the U.S.” on its website, but has since received a slew of negative reviews on restaurant rating site Yelp.

One Yelp user, Laura W, said in a one-star review: “It is disgusting that in 2017 a restaurant can promote such bigotry. Two people sharing a dessert is a sweet, often romantic endeavour and should be celebrated, not condemned.”

The Prime Rib’s general manager James MacLoed told the Post that English was not the waiter’s first language, adding: “I cannot believe that a waiter would have ever said anything like that. There’s no way we would condone anything remotely like this.”
