“On the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings, it’s my privilege to join you and, with a mixture of pride and sorrow, lead this service in honour of all who took part in the Normandy campaign. The legacy of their bravery and heroism, are the way of life and freedoms we enjoy today.”

Operation Neptune, the most ambitious amphibious military operation in the history of warfare involved more than 130,000 allied troops landing on five beaches across the Normandy coastline on 6 June 1944. The delayed, surprise landings were preceded by a 1200-plane, allied airborne strike taking out the Atlantic Wall’s critical infrastructure.

It marked the beginning of the Normandy Campaign, Operation Overlord, and proved a decisive turning point for allies in the Second World War. Leading to the liberation of France and Western Europe.

Worship will be led by the Minister of Glasgow Cathedral, Reverend Mark Johnstone assisted by Cathedral Chaplain, Reverend John Purves and the Moderator of Glasgow Presbytery, Reverend John Sturrock.

Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Scotland, Donald Cameron and Stewart Walker of the Royal British Legion (Scotland) will also attend.

The D-Day Service will feature the Glasgow Cathedral Choir accompanied by organist, Professor Malcolm Sim.
